Iniziamo col dire che i gatti sono animali misteriosi e imprevedibili ma al contempo anche molto abitudinari. Insomma, hanno una loro “litter routine". Non solo i gatti che vivono sempre in appartamento, e quindi al chiuso, hanno bisogno della lettiera però. Anche i gatti abituati a uscire in giardino, per chi ha la fortuna di avere uno spazio aperto recintato, hanno bisogno di una lettiera al chiuso. Può accadere, infatti, che micio per qualsiasi motivo non voglia fare i suoi bisogni all'aperto (magari a causa delle condizioni atmosferiche e di altri elementi di disturbo) e quindi è bene che abbia il suo angolo lettiera riparato in casa (altrimenti farà lo stesso i suoi bisogni in casa, sul pavimento o altrove...).
Tendenzialmente, i gatti si abituano con facilità all'uso della lettiera e se smettono all'improvviso di utilizzarla, cambiando dunque le loro abitudini legate all'igiene, potrebbe trattarsi di un campanello d'allarme. Il primo consiglio è, dunque, contattare il veterinario per poi riuscire a escludere eventuali problematiche di salute. Se non ci sono problemi su questo fronte, è possibile che si tratti di un qualsivoglia disagio (emotivo e non) insorto improvvisamente. Qualche esempio: trasloco, abitudini della famiglia modificate, cassettina troppo piccola, nuovi inquilini a quattro zampe, nuovi inquilini a due zampe, fragranze della lettiera (anche naturali), consistenza della lettiera sgradevole.

Generally, cats get used to using the litter box easily and if they suddenly stop using it, thus changing their hygiene habits, this could be a wake-up call. The first advice is, therefore, to contact the vet in order to be able to rule out any health problems. If there are no problems on this front, it is possible that it is any discomfort (emotional or not) that has suddenly arisen. A few examples: moving house, changed family habits, litter box too small, new four-legged tenants, new two-legged tenants, litter box fragrances (even natural ones), unpleasant litter consistency.
